FEBRUARY OPENS COLD, WITH NUMEROUS CHANCES FOR SNOW

Welcome to February!

Accuweather.com

The first week of February will open up like it ought to around these parts; cold with bouts of snow.

The systems moving through seem to be of the relatively weak, fast-moving variety, but could present slippery travel and locally, sudden bursts of heavier snow.

SUNDAY: Light snowfall early in the morning, then a period of moderate snowfall for a portion of the  region late day/evening; where this will occur is still uncertain. Areas over the southern and eastern portions of the region have the best shot at a burst of moderate snowfall Sunday night.

Another update (and hopefully a map will come tomorrow afternoon)

TUESDAY NIGHT/WEDNESDAY: Same as Sunday, with isolated locally higher amounts over three inches for Wednesday morning.

THURSDAY NIGHT/FRIDAY: Watching for a more organized system coming from the mid-west late in the week, but with slightly milder temps in advance of the storm. Seasonal tendency is for lighter precip events, so it’s best to assume that for now.

The cold will be persistently below-normal this week. A windy, cold day is in store for Monday, with little recovery above the freezing mark for Tuesday and Wednesday. The next chance for near-normal high temps looks to arrive late next week.

VERY HEAVY RAINS AND STRONG WINDS LATE WEDNESDAY EVENING …

The strong cold front that was mentioned in the last overview will sweep through on Wednesday evening, with torrential rains and wind speeds between 40-55mph. Some winds over Long island and coastal New Jersey may well exceed 55mph during the passage of the heaviest rains.

As if this weren’t enough, the spring-like nature of the system may yield an isolated thunderstorm during the heaviest rainfall.

The previous overview is basically on track.

Dry, but much colder, blustery weather settles in for the weekend, with abundant cloud cover. An exception may occur Saturday night; a weak storm system still has a chance to offer a shot at some light snow for the region, particularly near the coast.
