MARCH OPENS WITH A QUICK WINTER STORM

1. Snow develops late Sunday morning and then transitions to freezing rain and sleet for most areas Sunday afternoon and night before ending.  A general 2-4" will fall, with a glaze of ice; more snow will fall north and west of the city, with areas north and west of I95 receiving a general 3-6" of snow before a change to freezing rain. Monday morning's commute should be slightly impacted, but precip will be long gone by then.

2. Quiet overall through Tuesday, then another storm will move across. With the next storm, the transistion to rain will be quicker, resulting in lesser impacts on roads. Expect a light snow, with a quick change to rain for Tuesday night into Wednesday.  Readings may spike to near 50 before they come back down by Wednesday afternoon/night.

3. Cold and dry for week's end. Temps will continue well below normal, with highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

NYC RACES TOWARDS A RECORD COLD FEBRUARY

1. Bitter cold Monday, as the latest in  a series of ferocious shots of Arctic air infiltrates the western states. Highest temps will be in the morning before strong winds and colder temps settle in by midday and throughout the afternoon. Winds relax overnight Monday night/Tuesday, but that allows temps to tumble further (radiational cooling).

2. Dry for Tuesday, but still continued quite cold. A frontal boundary will move through Wednesday early morning with a few light snow showers in some places.

3. Storm system will develop Wednesday night and Thursday along the aforementioned front, but miss the region with its precip.

4. Near-to-below 0 wind-chills will be ushered back into the region for Thursday through Saturday. Coldest night will be Thursday night/Friday (in addition to Monday night) where temps will drop into the single digits. Some signs are there that indicate the extreme cold will start to abate by next week.

ANOTHER SHOT OF SNOW FOR MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY

The Valentine's Day snowfall produced little in the way of snow around most of the region.

Another light to moderate snowfall is on tap for Monday night into Tuesday. Snow should begin late in the evening Monday and continue through the morning commute on Tuesday before ending.

Due to the timing of the snowfall itself, a significant impact to the morning commute on Tuesday is likely.

Accumulations will be confined to NYC and points south and east.

Elsewhere further north, amounts should be even lighter as the storm's precipitation shield will have a hard time advancing north into a cold, dense air mass.

More brutal cold is in store for Wednesday night into Thursday, with wicked wind-chills during this time.

VALENTINE'S DAY SNOW, FOLLOWED BY SEVERE COLD....

1. Major blizzard will develop and clip the region for Saturday and Saturday night. Snow begins in the afternoon and continues into the overnight hours before ending. Deteriorating visibility will occur due to the very powdery nature of the snow (especially for the areas in red on the map below). Temps will rapidly fall during the storm, with dangerous, life-threatening cold settling over the region during the overnight hours on Sunday morning. Howling winds late Saturday through Sunday afternoon will make for sub-zero wind-chills, which will last for a long duration. Some wind gusts Sunday morning could lead to power outages and property damage, especially over Long Island.

2. Snow should wind down by very early Sunday morning. However, dangerous, wind-driven cold will continue into Sunday night, with record low temps possible. Winds will relax by Monday, but the mercury will only top out around the 20-degree mark in most places.

3. Another significant storm system possible for Tuesday into Wednesday, with potential for heavy precip. Temps will rise further, making the predictability of forecasting the type of precip a challenge.  Update will be needed Sunday.

4. Signs indicate that another formidable cold shot will take aim at the region for late next week after the mid-week storm goes by.  Overall, the current model guidance is strongly hinting at the idea that the highest temps from now through the end of next week will stay anchored below the 32-degree mark.
