COOLER AND MORE UNSETTLED WEATHER AS WE CLOSE OUT JUNE

A major change in the weather pattern will pave the way for excessive heat in the west and cool, wet and unsettled conditions in the eastern states; the transition will start Thursday and last through a good portion of next week.

Waves of low pressure will affect the region every couple of days, with bouts of rain and cool temps. The first storm will arrive tomorrow night and last through part of Friday morning before tapering off during the day. We should see around a half an inch of rainfall during this time frame.

On its heels, another area of low pressure will move into the region for Saturday with a more substantial shot at a soaking rainfall on the order of 1-2 inches. The current guidance indicates that rain will arrive around noon and continue through early Sunday morning before quitting by Sunday afternoon. If this materializes, it'll be a rare summer washout, with consistent rainfall over a period of at least 6-12 hours.

Along with this storm and a strong northeast wind flow, temps will be well-below normal levels with readings only topping out near 70F.

Another break in rain returns for Sunday afternoon through Monday. By Tuesday afternoon and night, more rain in the form of showers and thunderstorms creep in and move out by Wednesday morning.

A ROUND OF HEAVY RAIN POSSIBLE SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING...

1. Stubborn warm/cold front will be slow to move through for the next 24-36 hours. The result will be lots of clouds, fog (overnight tonight) and showers in the morning hours. Partial sunshine and high humidity for Friday, with a small risk of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Highs in the 80s Friday, with clearing skies at night.

2.  Dry for Saturday, then clouds lower and thicken by evening. Moderate to heavy rain develops, with a chance of thunderstorms Saturday evening through Sunday morning before clearing out Sunday afternoon. Potential for a soaking rainfall, with added influence from the decayed remnants of Bill.  Exact track still uncertain. Another update may be needed tomorrow.

3. Dry for Sunday night and Monday, but then chances for showers/storms increase for Tuesday afternoon and night as a frontal system moves in from the north.  By Wednesday, chances for showers and storms will be lower as the aforementioned front moves further to our south.

LATE-WEEK PATTERN IS A CLASSIC, MID-SUMMER SET-UP

The weather mid-to-late week will be characterized by warm, muggy weather and multiple opportunities for showers and thunderstorms.

After a mild, dry day Wednesday, the humidity will start to increase Wednesday night into Thursday. Temps will be a few degrees warmer on Thursday as compared to Wednesday; all areas, even at the coast, will be basking in 80-plus degree readings, while the urban areas will be in the upper 80s to near 90 for high temps. Thursday will easily be the hottest day of the week.

A weak disturbance will trigger afternoon storms, but it's more likely to happen west and north of NYC and the coast, where the air will be much more unstable.

After another muggy, warm day Friday, chances for widespread showers and thunderstorms will increase late Friday night into Saturday morning. We'll see a break in the action Saturday during the day, but then more showers and storms will bubble up yet again. The front for Saturday has the best chance of touching off a round of intense storms capable of producing downpours, frequent lighting and gusty winds during the late day and early evening hours.

Sunday is shaping up to be dry for all areas, as the region will be situated between the departing cold front and another system, which will be set to arrive for Monday afternoon and night. More showers and storms will creep in Monday, but the better chance looks to be Tuesday of next week for any organized, widespread rainfall.

BREAKING OUT OF THE EARLY JUNE TEMP SWOON

1. Spotty light rain overnight and through the early part of the day Friday will give way to intervals of sunshine and dry conditions by afternoon. Some more isolated rain showers arrive overnight Friday/Saturday, but they will be very light and will most likely stay to the north and west of NYC and the coast.

2. Sunny Saturday, with temps in the 70s to near 80.  More of the same Sunday, with a bit less humidity.

3. Chance for showers increase for Monday, but there is a greater chance for more widespread action Tuesday, as a cold front sweeps through the area.

4. Highs will generally stay in the 70s through the forecast period; no widespread, 90-degree heat is in the offing through the next seven days.
